Australia during the 1920's and 1930's
The period of time between the World Wars, the 1920’s through to the 1930’s, was a time of great social, political and economic change for Australia.
After the end of World War I, Australia was determined to leave the hardships of the war behind them and decided to have a whole new way of life. The 1920’s were years of social and economic extremes. They were times of new fashion, new music, partying and countless technological advancement’s such as the motor car and the vacuum. During this era there was much conflict between the new ‘radical’ revolutionary ideas and the older conservative views.
The Wall Street Crash during October 1929 signified the start of the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a time of extreme hardship for Australia during the 1930’s. The unemployment rate was high, at 32% of Australians unemployed. Many people were without work and a steady income and many people lost their houses and assets. The fast paced life that people had become accustomed to during the 1920’s soon began to slow down.
Famous people such as Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and events such as the Opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge that occurred during this time period had a huge impact on the people then, aswell as now.
